Heat N Seal Embroidery Backing

Gunold Heat N’ Seal™ , Otherwise Known As BSN™ Embroidery Backing.

Permanent Heat-Based Bonding FIlm, Heat N' Seal is Exclusive to Gunold

Appliqué the Easy Way

Gunold Heat-seal, or BSN film, is a special film that allows an embroiderer to obtain a permanent bond of appliqués, embroideries, patches, and emblems onto almost any fabric. Applied by a household iron or heat press, it supplies a permanent bond, including edges, borders and seams. For decades it’s been one of our most popular items.

BSN™ is available in two different versions: one washable up to 104° F (for delicates) and one washable up to 203° F (for industrial applications).

Instructions for Use:

Step 1. Coating embroidery patterns

  • Iron the base fabric prior to the BSN application. Fabric finishes will vaporize and you’ll achieve an better base bond
  • Place Heat n Seal onto the reverse side of the embroidery pattern so the protective paper will be preserved. Heat n Seal is then welded onto the embroidery pattern using a standard ironing press.
  • Type Setting Temperature Pressure Period
J-Type appr. 275°F medium pressure abt. 5 Sec.
H-Type appr. 220°F medium pressure abt. 5 Sec.
  • Period is when using an ironing press. However, type H can be ironed with a standard iron (allow appr. 10 to 15 seconds under slight pressure).
  • To achieve a durable adhesion, the base material must be ironed - prior to the application of Heat n Seal.
  • Do not apply too high a temperature or too high a pressure when coating the embroidery patterns. The foil should only be "tacked on" and should penetrate too deeply into the underthread and carrier cloth. This allows a sufficient quantity of foil left on the reverse side of the embroidery pattern when fixing it to the garment later.
  • After coating, remove the silicone paper and cut or punch out the patterns. They’re now ready to be fixed.

Step 2. Permanently adhere the coated embroidery pattern from step #1 onto the fabric or garment using a similar press

    Type Setting Temperature Pressure Period
J-Type appr. 275°F medium pressure abt. 5 Sec.
H-Type appr. 220°F medium pressure abt. 5 Sec.

All values stated are averages and have to be adapted to the thickness and the heat carrying capacity of the specific cloth. You may also vary temperatures and period. A rise in temperature will result in a shorter period required.

Step 3. Post-Production Washing Tests

  • Full adhesiveness is reached after 48 hours, complete wash tests after this period.
